“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.”

~Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services (MLKFS) is reaching out to our community with an important update following an emergency situation at our Community Center. On the afternoon of Friday, March 27 a gas leak was discovered on site. While the source of the leak could not be immediately identified by Eversource, the gas was turned off as a precautionary measure and the building was closed. Prioritizing the safety of our community is our highest concern.

“In the days that followed, the outpouring of support from every corner of our community has been truly remarkable — a living testament to the power of Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community, and a reflection of how deeply this center is woven into the fabric of Springfield. This opened doors to partnerships for a relocation plan to best serve our youth and families.” — Shannon M. Rudder, MBA, President & CEO, Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services

Rudder continued, “We reaffirm our commitment to our community. This is a temporary disruption — not a detour from our mission. MLKFS is committed to reopening our Community Center facility safely and fully. While we work swiftly to return to regular programming, MLKFS has larger plans in motion for sustainable capital improvements to our Community Center that reflect the long-term investment our community deserves.”

MLKFS is actively working with partners across Springfield to ensure continuity of and access to programming for the families and youth we serve. Key updates include:

  • Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall partnered with MLKFS to identify a relocation site for our long-standing afterschool program. As a result, Principal Sutton of Rebecca Johnson School will generously welcome our after-school families during this temporary relocation.
  • Atu White of Dunbar Community Center & Mt. Zion Baptist Church confirmed use of classroom space as the relocation site for our youth mental health Beat the Odds (BTO) program and in discussion for the Night Spot recreation program (basketball and volleyball).
  • Jada Waters of The Boys & Girls Club Family Center welcomes MLKFS youth and families and serves as an alternative evening program option in our community.
  • To ensure safe delivery of food and wellness services to our weekly clients, our emergency food pantry is cancelled this week. News of reopening to follow.
  • Our 2026 HBCU Tour continues with its Kick-Off scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 6:30am from The MLKFS Community Center.
  • Our Administrative Offices located at 106 Wilbraham remain open.

Vendors addressing the gas leak are actively onsite to share remedies for the repair of this facility issue.

MLKFS is committed to keeping our community informed. Please follow our updates on social media as our relocation and recovery plans evolve. Thank you for your continued support, trust, and partnership.

Department of Youth Services Announces the Third Annual Holiday Tree Jubilee

In Partnership with Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services, Give Music, and the Center for Human Development (CHD)

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” — Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS) and the Center for Human Development’s Adolescent Reentry Services division are proud to once again partner with three local nonprofit organizations—Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services, Give Music, and the Springfield Cultural Partnership—to present the Third Annual Holiday Tree Jubilee. This festive community celebration will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tower Square Food Court, 1500 Main Street, Springfield.

Thanks to the generosity of community sponsors, the Holiday Tree Jubilee remains FREE and open to all. “The Holiday Tree Jubilee reminds us that even in challenging times, we can create something beautiful when we come together. The magic starts with us — with every partner, volunteer, and community member working to bring joy to youth and families.” Shares DYS Facility Administrator, Katisha Woods-Johnson.

This year’s Jubilee promises an unforgettable evening filled with holiday cheer for families and youth. Attendees will enjoy photos with Santa, live carolers, a hot chocolate station, dance performances, face painting, cookie decorating, ornament making, letters to Santa, Friendly’s sundaes, and more. The celebration highlight—an exciting holiday tree raffle—features 105 (and counting!) beautifully decorated, family-themed holiday trees, all donated and designed by community partners. Every tree will go home with families in attendance at no cost.

“We are honored to continue this purposeful partnership as we usher in the holiday season for families in our community,” said Shannon M. Rudder, President & CEO of MLKFS. “This collaboration represents more than a celebration—it is a heartfelt commitment to spread much needed joy, hope, and support to our neighbors. Together, we are reminded of the strength of community and the importance of lifting one another up.”

Additionally, MLK Family Services hosts a Mobile Food Bank in partnership with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location. Our pantry team is powered by the heart and hands of devoted volunteers who show up every day with one goal: to ensure no one in our community goes hungry. Our partnership with Monson truly bolsters our ability to meet the growing need and reaffirms that compassion and commitment still win, even in the hardest of times.”

“Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.”

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services Inc. announces the appointment of Ariana M. Williams, BSPH, MPA, as the organization’s first-ever Chief of Public Health Strategy & Innovation.

William’s journey with MLK Family Services began in 2018 as a part-time Community Health Worker, after earning her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from American International College (AIC) as a member of the program’s second graduating class. Within nine months, she was promoted to become the organization’s first Director of Public Health, where she spent three years leading initiatives that strengthened community health, public health programming, and youth development. After a brief period away, she returned in February 2023 as a Grants Consultant, helping to expand and sustain critical programs. In this new role, she steps into a historic leadership role as the organization’s first-ever Chief of Public Health Strategy & Innovation, where she will integrate public health strategies into the organization’s core mission, develop new community-driven initiatives, and strengthen strategic partnerships that advance health equity.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ariana back home to MLK Family Services to fill this inaugural role of Chief of Public Health Strategy and Innovation. This role marks a bold step forward in our commitment to advancing community health and well-being, inspired by our strategic planning process. Ariana’s passion for public health and her deep connection to our community make her an exceptional leader to integrate innovative strategies that will help us meet the evolving needs of those we serve. Together, we will continue to work toward Dr. King’s vision of creating a healthier, more equitable future for all.” shares MLKFS President & CEO, Shannon M. Rudder, MBA.

A Springfield native, Williams is also the CEO & Founder of Catalyst for Equity Consulting, where she helps nonprofits strengthen their position in the public health ecosystem by aligning with public health funding, developing evidence-based programs, and driving systemic change. She has led community-based initiatives in problem gambling prevention, gun violence prevention, food insecurity and nutrition, and mental health advocacy. In 2019, Williams led a cohort of Junior Community Health Workers, whose advocacy efforts played an instrumental role in raising the tobacco purchase age from 18 to 21 in Springfield, MA. Their work later contributed to the movement to eliminate flavored tobacco products; a tactic used by the tobacco industry to target youth.

In 2020, she co-led Springfield’s first-ever Youth Mental Health Advisory Board, “Beat the Odds,” creating a safe space and platform for young people to support one another, share lived experiences and influence mental health policies and resources. Williams earned her Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Westfield State University in 2024. She is also an adjunct professor at American International College, teaching in the same public health program she graduated from. Additionally, she serves on the board of the Rise, L.E.A.P, & Achieve Foundation Inc. and the board of Anti-Racism Community Organizers (ARCO).

Williams is committed to ensuring MLK Family Services continues to be a trusted leader in community health, advocacy, and empowerment. “Stepping into this role is not just a career milestone—it is a continuation of my purpose. MLK Family Services has played a pivotal role in my growth, both professionally and personally, and I am honored to now help shape its future. Public health is about community, and I look forward to deepening our impact, expanding critical services, and ensuring that our work remains a trusted resource for those who need it most.” – Ariana M. Williams
